Minecraft Fireworks have been a part of the game for many years, introduced back in 2012 in Java Edition 1.4.6. They were primarily used for aesthetic purposes, but received new functionalities in Minecraft’s 1.11 update, like faster transportation and combat, making the item extremely useful. In this article, we’ll be going over how you can craft a firework and what they can be used for.

Minecraft offers players three tiers of ‘Flight Duration’, ranging from 1-3. Each tier of flight is faster than the other, with 3 being the fastest. If you wish to increase the duration of the firework, simply add another piece of gunpowder in the crafting grid.

Using Fireworks with Elytra in Minecraft

When Minecraft Fireworks received an update, it allowed players to traverse the skies using fireworks that they have crafted in their hotbar. While gliding, players can continuously use the fireworks to increase the amount of speed they’re traveling.

To start flying around your Minecraft world with an Elytra, double jump to glide and right-click the firework in your hotbar to take off. Be careful when soaring through the skies, as colliding with a surface at high speeds can cause instant death.

Using Fireworks on Minecraft Crossbows

Minecraft Fireworks are great for traversing through the skies and creating an aesthetic atmosphere, but did you know that they can be used for PvP? If you put the firework in your off-hand and load your crossbow with your main hand, you’ll be able to launch a firework towards a player, dealing a lot of damage. Additionally, if you have the Multishot enchantment on your crossbow, you can shoot 3 firework rockets at the cost of one.

How to make a Firework Star in Minecraft

If you want your fireworks to light up the skies with colorful particles or unique explosion designs, you’ll need to craft a Firework Star. Luckily, it’s simple.

To craft a basic Firework Star, combine one gunpowder and any dye in the crafting grid. You will see the description of the item stating the size of the ball. By adding an additional Fire Charge to the crafting recipe, you can increase the duration of the explosion’s appearance, making the Firework Stars appear much longer.

Use a crafting table to create a Fire Charge by combining 1 gunpowder, 1 blaze powder, and 1 coal. When creating shapes for your firework, you can only add one shape for each Firework Star. Here are some examples.

  • Fire Charge > Large Ball Explosion with heavy sounds.

  • Gold Nugget > Star-shaped explosion.

  • Head (any) > Creeper-shaped (Creeper Face) explosion.

  • Feather > Burst Explosion

You can also enhance Firework Stars with special effects by adding the following items:

  • Glowstone Dust > Twinkle (Crackle effect and sounds after the explosion.)

  • Diamond > Trail effect after the explosion.

If you add both the Glowstone Dust and Diamond in the crafting recipe, you can have both effects on the firework. Fun Fact: You can use these Firework Rockets to create a trail behind you whenever you’re flying through the skies on an elytra.
